Moving can be an exciting time, as well as a stressful time; however, there are things you can do to avoid the stress. Obviously, when you are moving, there is going to be a lot of packing to do. So take some time to plan out your packing and you will be able to skip the “stress” part. Here are some tips you can use when packing your things before moving.
Packing and Moving Supplies
When packing you are going to need sufficient packing material to get all your things properly packed before you move. You will need boxes and various other material to start packing. Here’s a list of things you will need to pack your items.
- Moving boxes (get new ones and avoid bugs and bacteria from old boxes)
- Clear sealing tape
- Bubble wrap
- Measuring tape/li>
You will need the measuring tape to measure your things and purchase the right size boxes.
Make a list
It is recommended to make a list of what goes in each box and keep it with you. This way you will not have to wonder what you put in each box when you get to your new location. As you place things in the box, make a note in your list.
Where to start?
You can start off with packing your fragile items first. Use the bubble wrap to carefully wrap all fragile items and place them in boxes. Mark each of the boxes with the permanent marker so that you know what you have put in it when you get to your new location.
Decide what to move
There may be some things that you might not want to take to your new location, so it is important to decide what you want to take and what you want to leave. This is especially important if you have a lot of things in your storage or garage. Make an inventory of what you have and what you really need before you start packing.
Pack your non-essential items, especially the ones you don’t really need now. Things like winter clothing, heavy blankets, etc., can be packed and kept ready to be moved. You might also want to pack all sports and gym equipment in advance so that you don’t have to deal with it just before you leave.
Label the boxes
As you pack the boxes, label them and leave instructions of how to handle them. This is important if the boxes contain fragile items. You might want to note that these boxes are handled carefully and placed on top and not at the bottom of other boxes.
If you are packing your electronic devices, start of by disconnecting them and properly wrapping them in bubble wrap. You might want to keep your electronic devices and counterparts together, like for example, your hi-fi system including surround sound speakers and cables. You might want to use ziplock bags to store the cables, this way you won’t have to worry about misplacing them.
Packing major appliances
You will need to take extra care while packing major appliances so that there is no damage to them while moving. For example, if you are moving your refrigerator, you will need to turn it off and unplug it at least 24 hours earlier. Remove all foodstuff and clean the refrigerator well before getting it packed and ready to be moved. The same goes for the gas stove, disconnect the gas (you might need to call your gas company to do this) and clean the stove before you pack it.
Picture frames and mirrors
Picture frames and mirrors require special care as they can easily break while moving. You will need to get flat boxes to pack your picture frames and mirrors. You will need to tape one end of the flat box with sealing tape and wrap the picture frame or mirror with sufficient bubble wrap and slide it into the box. Seal the top of the box properly so that the picture frame or mirror does not slide out and mark it as “fragile”. Make sure the box is placed on its side and not flat in the moving truck.
Pack and overnight bag
It is important to pack an overnight bag with all your essential things like a change of clothing, toiletries, mobile phone chargers, keys, laptop, etc. This will give you easy access to several important things you might need while moving.
